The basis of a perfect photograph is excellent lighting. Whether you’re shooting a model, an indoor landscape, or food advertisements, your images will look poor if your lighting is poor.
It’s impossible to achieve the perfect balance of contrast and brightness in ultra-low light unless you have natural light streams. This is why strobe lights are necessary to create an artificial lighting setup to help you achieve the desired exposure for your photos.
It’s hard to know what specs to look for when buying the Best Strobe Lights For Photography online, especially when you can’t test the light before you buy. What is a strobe light in photography?
Imagine an outdoor wedding, one you were hired to document, with T-minus 30 at sunset. You are armed with nothing more than a few practical appliques outside the venue, your beautiful bride and groom, and the power of the sun. They are taking their sweet time, however, and you need to catch the iconic kiss if you want to walk away with your paycheck completely intact.
If you've ever been locked up in this unfortunate corner, you're already familiar with the bitter sting of defeat. What if we told you that you must never be without a valid light source again? Running a line from the venue to a freestanding moonlight would require no more than an extension cord and plug. A battery-operated flash would be even more comfortable and versatile.
Strobe lights, like any flash, are in principle energy-saving. Instead of continuously operating at their full output capacity, they release a short, incredibly powerful burst of light when the test trigger is activated or the camera shutter is released. The artist is able to synchronize the strobe with the camera shutter using a mounted wireless transmitter or with a physical sync cable connected directly to the light.
These units differ from speed lights, a term referring to an external flash mounted on the camera head itself. You'll recognize these paparazzo-style accessories as the flashes that many wedding and event photographers always have on hand for when the party inevitably goes late into the night. These flashes are fine in a pinch, but the freedom and flexibility that studio flashes offer far outweigh the set-up and hassle.
How to use strobe lights in photography
efore we dive into it, here are some key photography terms to remember:
- Transmitter and Receiver: Unless you are using a physical sync cable to trigger the strobe, you will need a hot shoe transmitter that can communicate with your digital strobe light wirelessly; you can see what we use in the picture above. Like walkie-talkies, you'll need to make sure both the strobe and transmitter are set to the same channel.
- Flash Duration: Describes the duration of the flash when it is activated. Think of this as the "shutter speed" of the strobe.
- Recycle Time: After being discharged, even the most sophisticated strobe will need some time to regain its composure before it can be turned back on. For some flashes, it will take less than a second.
- Guide Number: Guide numbers, called "GN" for short, are a manufacturer-supplied list of values that relate the flash output to different ISO ratings . Together, when taken into consideration with the distance between the flash and the subject, this list of guide numbers will help you find your foothold after the first setting.
- Modeling Light: Every modern digital strobe light will be equipped with a modeling light. This light will be very dim compared to the true strobe when activated.
